From 1st September 2024, Members have the OPTION of clearly visible brands or a readable microchip, providing the sex, colour and markings are accurately recorded on the registration.
Horses may be branded with freeze or fire brands (stock brand, identification number and foaling season year brand). Registration of a stock brand with the Department of Agriculture may be compulsory in your state. Contact your state authority to confirm the requirements.
Any horse which has not been branded, where evidence of the three brands is not clearly visible OR brands are not visible, the horse MUST be microchipped.
The Society does not have a register of brands; it only records a horse's brands, when registered, for identification purposes. To trace the owner of a brand, we would recommend that you contact the Registrar of Brands in your state for assistance.
Click Here to Trace a Brand.
A microchip with 15 digits is recommended and will waive the requirement for a horse to be branded. The microchip number needs to be recorded on the Application for Registration.
The Society's Online Stud Book provides an opportunity for users to search for a horse by microchip number.
